Nixsy Formula Chains Explained!

October 10, 2026

🌿Most of us have done the “breed two traits together to unlock a new trait” style of breeding before. But once you get that special result, usually that’s the end of the journey—you have a pretty new trait to admire, but there isn’t much more to do with it.
So we started wondering… what if you could go further?🌿

🌱What if, instead of one formula leading to one result, that result became an ingredient in another formula? And that result could lead to something else again?
So that’s exactly what we did.
With Nixsy Formula Chains, breeding formulas can now be connected together in stages, creating a trail of discoveries that breeders can work their way through.🌱

🐞How does a Formula Chain work?
A Formula Chain is broken into stages. Each stage gives you something you’ll need for the next part of the chain.🐞

🍁Our first chain, Autumn Grove, has three stages.🍁

Stage 1 — Find the first ingredients
🍂Stage 1 begins with traits that are already out in the Nixsy population.
For Autumn Grove, there are two different crosses to discover:
Chestnut Trait + any Gold, Copper, or Silver trait
→ Harvest Ember Eyes
and
Sage Trait + any Ladybug or Lovebites trait
→ Woodland Glow Eyes
When we say Chestnut Trait or Sage Trait, either a coat or an eye can count. Likewise, the other side of the formula must use a qualifying coat or eye. So Hidden Silver Coat, .Heart - Copper Eye, Egyptian Gold Eye, etc for the Gold/Copper/Silver trait. Then any color Lovebites Eyes, or any color of Ladybug Love Coat.
The important part is that the two required ingredients need to come from the two breeders—you can’t satisfy both sides of the formula with traits on the same pet.

Examples:

  • Sage coat female X Lovebites - Teal eyes male = Yes. 1 qualifying trait on each parent
  • Chestnut eye male X Hidden Copper coat = Yes, 1 qualifying trait on each parent
  • Sage coat male with Lovebites - Orange eyes X Midnight prism coat female with Red Eyes = No, the female pet has no qualifying trait.

Once you’ve found both Stage 1 eyes, you’re ready to move deeper into the chain.

🌿Stage 2 — Put your discoveries to work
This is where Formula Chains start becoming different from a normal one-and-done breeding formula.
Breed:
Harvest Ember Eyes + Woodland Glow Eyes
A successful Formula result can give you one of two Stage 2 discoveries:
Woodland Harvest Eyes
or
Autumn Grove Russet Coat
Both of these are important, because both become ingredients for Stage 3.
So even though two breeders may discover different Stage 2 results, neither one has reached a dead end.

🍁Stage 3 — Mix and match your Stage 2 results
Once you have Woodland Harvest or Autumn Grove Russet, the final stage opens up.
You can breed any two Stage 2 results together:
Woodland Harvest × Woodland Harvest
Woodland Harvest × Autumn Grove Russet
Autumn Grove Russet × Woodland Harvest
Autumn Grove Russet × Autumn Grove Russet
All of those combinations can lead into the final hidden Autumn Grove coat collection.
There are four hidden coats to discover:
Autumn Grove Ochre
Autumn Grove Moss
Autumn Grove Crimson
Autumn Grove Patina
They aren’t all equally common, either. Ochre is the easiest of the four to discover, followed by Moss, then Crimson, with Patina being the rarest.

Why Formula Chains❓
We wanted formulas to feel less like checking a single combination off a list and more like an actual breeding project.
Your first discovery gives you a reason to keep breeding it. Your next discovery opens another path. Different breeders may reach the same destination in different ways, and traits that might otherwise have simply been collection pieces become useful ingredients for what comes next.
It also means we can build future Formula Chains in all kinds of ways. Some may be short. Some may branch. Some may have multiple possible results along the way. And some may lead to things you probably won’t see coming.
For now, Autumn Grove is our first adventure into chained formulas, and we’re excited to see who starts piecing it together.
Keep your eyes on those pedigrees, experiment with your pairings, and remember:
sometimes finding a new trait is only the beginning.🐾
